Earlier today, Matthew Ball, the CEO of investment strategy firm Epyllion, unveiled an early version of a compelling presentation titled “The State of Video Gaming in 2025.” This insightful slideshow draws on data from reputable market research firms such as IDG, Newzoo, and Circana to provide a comprehensive overview of global trends shaping the gaming industry.

The news, however, isn’t all positive. After a remarkable growth surge that lasted from 2011 to 2021, the industry has hit a plateau. Revenue growth has stagnated over the past three years, creating an atmosphere of risk aversion among investors and stalling new initiatives within the sector.

Yet, amidst this challenging landscape, there are glimmers of hope. Epyllion’s analysis highlights that PC gaming remains a “bright spot,” continuing to thrive and now representing the majority of revenue generated from non-mobile content.

As we look ahead, it’s clear that both PC and console gaming have evolved into significantly larger markets compared to the early 2010s. By 2024, consumers were projected to spend nearly $50 billion more on PC and console games than they did just a few years prior. While challenges persist, the resilience of specific segments offers a promising path forward for the gaming industry.

Epyllion has offered an intriguing perspective on the flourishing landscape of PC gaming, crediting its robust expansion to a variety of distinct advantages over the console market. Among these benefits is an extensive library of available titles, which boasts superior backward compatibility. Additionally, PC gamers enjoy immediate access to web browsers, social media platforms, and streaming software, not to mention the impressive performance capabilities of high-end gaming rigs.

But the narrative doesn’t end there. Epyllion asserts that the momentum behind PC gaming is still on the rise. This surge can be attributed to several factors, including the recent trend of cross-releasing games that were once exclusive to consoles, advancements in portable gaming systems such as those powered by SteamOS, and the ubiquitous presence of Roblox. As Epyllion points out, “Hundreds of millions of children growing up on Roblox are unlikely to ask for a $500 console to play AAA games,” highlighting a significant shift in gaming preferences among younger audiences.

However, while Epyllion’s outlook appears optimistic for the future of PC gaming, it’s essential to recognize that there is no clear consensus on market share between consoles and PCs. A report from Newzoo in August 2023 revealed that consumer spending on console games had reached an impressive $56.1 billion, while PC gaming lagged at approximately $40 billion. To delve deeper into this disparity, we sought insights from industry analyst Matthew Ball.

Ball explained via email to PC Gamer that IDG is often seen as the authoritative source for sales tracking within the gaming industry, which is why he primarily relied on their estimates. He also mentioned Pelham Smithers, a private research firm favoured by the Financial Times and Bloomberg, which paints a contrasting picture—suggesting that the PC market is actually 50% larger than that of consoles. While IDC’s figures are somewhat aligned with IDG’s, they do not match up exactly.

Ultimately, Ball acknowledged that “there is some disagreement” among researchers. He theorized that discrepancies in reported sales might stem from differing methodologies when tracking game sales in China, where he notes that most AA and AAA titles are played on PCs. In crafting his analysis, Ball indicated he had relied on insights from publishers along with cross-referencing data from various sources like IDC and Bloomberg.

Looking ahead, Ball expressed confidence in Epyllion’s assessment of the prospects for PC gaming. The ever-evolving landscape suggests that with emerging technologies and changing consumer habits, the future may favour the realm of PC gaming as it continues to carve out its niche in an increasingly competitive market.
