Abstract:

Chinese New Year (CNY) is a significant cultural celebration in Singapore, marked by traditional practices, symbolic decorations, and festive foods. In recent years, local artisans have been showcasing their creativity by designing innovative and unique CNY merchandise, ranging from edible mahjong tiles to bak kwa earrings. This paper explores the diverse and imaginative products created by Singapore artisans to commemorate the Year of the Horse, highlighting the blending of traditional and modern elements, as well as the incorporation of personal values and cultural symbolism. Through a qualitative analysis of various CNY-themed products, this study aims to provide insights into the creative expressions of Singapore artisans and their contributions to the cultural heritage of the country.

Introduction:

Chinese New Year is a time-honored celebration in Singapore, marked by family reunions, traditional foods, and symbolic decorations. The festival is an opportunity for locals to showcase their creativity and cultural identity through various forms of expression, including art, craft, and design. In recent years, Singapore artisans have been pushing the boundaries of traditional CNY merchandise, incorporating modern materials, techniques, and ideas into their creations. This paper examines the unique and imaginative CNY products designed by local artisans, highlighting their creative expressions and contributions to the cultural heritage of Singapore.

Methodology:

This study employed a qualitative approach, involving a thematic analysis of CNY-themed products created by Singapore artisans. The data collection involved reviewing online platforms, social media, and local craft markets to identify and document unique CNY merchandise. The products were categorized into several themes, including traditional symbols, modern interpretations, and cultural fusion. The analysis focused on the design elements, materials, and cultural significance of each product, as well as the artisans’ inspirations and creative processes.

Results:

The study identified eight sets of unique CNY merchandise, showcasing the diversity and imagination of Singapore artisans. The products included:

Edible mahjong tiles, designed to resemble traditional mahjong pieces but made from food-grade materials.
Bak kwa earrings, created from clay and featuring intricate details to mimic the texture of barbecued pork.
Horse-shaped cookies, baked and decorated with traditional CNY symbols and colors.
Mandarin orange figurines, made from clay and colorful pipe cleaners, representing good-luck symbols and auspicious emblems.
Polymer clay earrings, featuring traditional Chinese emblems, such as the zodiac animal and flowers, blended with personal values and cultural symbolism.
Clicker fidget toys, designed in the shape of Caishen, the Chinese God of Fortune, and other festive characters.
Pet tags, made from bioplastic materials and personalized to the pet’s breed, color, and name, featuring Daruma doll designs and other good-luck charms.
Goat milk biscuits, shaped like coins, Japanese maneki-neko (beckoning cat), gold ingots, and mandarin oranges, showcasing cultural fusion and creativity.

Discussion:

The study reveals that Singapore artisans are pushing the boundaries of traditional CNY merchandise, incorporating modern materials, techniques, and ideas into their creations. The products demonstrate a blending of traditional and modern elements, as well as the incorporation of personal values and cultural symbolism. The artisans’ use of social media platforms and online marketplaces has enabled them to showcase their creativity and reach a wider audience, contributing to the cultural heritage of Singapore.

The study also highlights the significance of cultural fusion and exchange in the creation of unique CNY merchandise. The incorporation of Japanese and Western elements, such as the Daruma doll and maneki-neko, demonstrates the artisans’ willingness to experiment and innovate, while maintaining the cultural essence of CNY celebrations.

Conclusion:

This study demonstrates the creativity and imagination of Singapore artisans in designing unique CNY merchandise, showcasing the blending of traditional and modern elements, as well as the incorporation of personal values and cultural symbolism. The products highlight the cultural significance of CNY celebrations in Singapore and the importance of preserving and promoting cultural heritage through creative expressions. As the country continues to evolve and diversify, it is essential to recognize and support the contributions of local artisans, who play a vital role in shaping the cultural identity of Singapore.

Recommendations:

Based on the findings of this study, several recommendations can be made to support the development of unique CNY merchandise in Singapore:
