SINGAPORE: A new scam tactic involves fraudulent emails that seem to be from Singapore Customs. The emails aim to deceive recipients by impersonating the agency.
On Friday (Jan 31), Singapore Customs alerted the public about this scam through a Facebook update. The emails instruct recipients to “select their refund method,” offering options like bank transfers or credit card payments. They also include a hyperlink for claiming the tax refund.
The agency clarified that it does not send links for cash transactions, indicating that these emails are not legitimate.
Furthermore, Singapore Customs emphasised that official communications will always originate from email addresses ending in @customs.gov.sg and never from personal accounts such as Gmail or Yahoo.
They advised individuals to carefully examine the sender’s email address when receiving suspicious communications, even if the name appears to reference “Customs” or similar.
In a prior warning posted on December 20, Singapore Customs also highlighted a different scam involving a counterfeit document featuring the agency’s forged logo. The document requested payment to release a parcel supposedly held for customs clearance.
The agency stated that anyone uncertain about any communication claiming to be from Singapore Customs can verify its legitimacy by contacting customs_feedback@customs.gov.sg.
The police have consistently urged the public to remain vigilant against scams.
To protect themselves, individuals can follow the ACT framework: Add security features, Check for signs of a scam, and Tell authorities and others about any suspicious activities.
Anyone with information regarding such fraudulent activities or who has doubts about a phone call or message can report it online at www.police.gov.sg/i-witness or call 1800-255-0000.
