I’ll review some of the notable Indiana Jones video games from past decades:
  1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (Atari 2600, 1982) was one of the earliest Indiana Jones video game adaptations. It was notoriously difficult and confusing. Players controlled Indy in a top-down perspective, attempting to navigate through various scenes from the movie. While groundbreaking for its time, it’s now considered more of a curiosity than a genuinely enjoyable game.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Arcade, 1985) This arcade game was a beat ’em up-style action game that closely followed the movie’s plot. Players could fight enemies using Indy’s whip and fists, rescuing children and battling through the temple. It was praised for its graphics and action-packed gameplay at the time.

Indiana Jones’ Greatest Adventures (Super Nintendo, 1994) is often considered one of the best classic Indiana Jones games. Developed by LucasArts, it covered stories from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. The game was a side-scrolling action platformer with varied gameplay that incorporated action sequences and puzzle-solving

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (PC/Nintendo 64, 1999) This was one of the first 3D Indiana Jones adventures. Developed by LucasArts, it moved Indy into a fully 3D world, set in the late 1950s. The game involved solving puzzles, exploring various international locations, and battling enemies. It was praised for its ambitious approach to translating Indy’s adventures into a 3D environment.

Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb (Xbox/PS2/PC, 2003): Many fans consider this action-adventure title one of the best Indiana Jones games. Set in 1935, it featured a more sophisticated combat system and more complex puzzle-solving. The game also allowed players to use Indy’s whip in creative ways and took a more cinematic approach to gameplay.

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures (Multiple Platforms, 2008) A lighthearted take on the first three movies, this LEGO game brought humour and accessibility to the Indiana Jones universe. It covered the original trilogy with the trademark LEGO game style of comedy and cooperative gameplay.

LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues (Multiple Platforms, 2009) This sequel expanded on the first LEGO Indy game, including levels from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and allowing more player creativity with level-building features.

The upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle seems to be continuing this legacy, promising a new adventure that aims to capture the spirit of the classic Indiana Jones games while leveraging modern gaming technology.

Each of these games attempted to capture the spirit of Indiana Jones in different ways – from simple action games to more complex adventure titles. The best entries managed to blend puzzle-solving, action, and the sense of archaeological adventure that defines the Indiana Jones character.
