In a comprehensive series of interviews, Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), Senior Vice Presidents of Cybersecurity, and Managing Directors of Information Security from various regions across the globe shared insightful observations regarding significant trends in cyberattacks, electronic fraud, and defensive measures against cyber threats. Among the most striking findings from their report was the detection of 74 campaigns aimed at pilfering nonpublic market data.

Additionally, 77 respondents reported facing assaults on their application programming interfaces (APIs). A concerning 58 individuals noted instances of counter-incident responses where attackers successfully disabled cybersecurity agents or manipulated logs and timestamps; some even launched distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to hinder the victims’ ability to respond effectively.

Furthermore, there was a notable rise in application attacks—58 participants experienced these incidents—highlighting increasingly common tactics such as ClassLoader manipulation, Expression Language Injection, and untrusted deserialisation. The report also indicated emerging threats targeting supply chains within software development and delivery processes. Disturbingly, 48 organisations fell victim to destructive attacks intended to obliterate data as a form of punishment. Lastly, 45 participants expressed concerns that they had been subjected to covert attacks that went undetected by their defences.

Every year, the scale and intricacy of cybercrime attacks are on the rise. Derek Booth, who serves as the Assistant to the Special Agent-in-Charge at the U.S. Secret Service and leads the Mountain West Cyber Fraud Task Force, remarked on the remarkable creativity displayed by these criminals. The landscape of cybercrime has shifted dramatically from earlier tactics like pig butchering, ransomware, and business email compromise (BEC) to more recent threats such as sextortion and cryptocurrency fraud. He emphasised that as these criminal methods advance, society must adapt accordingly; otherwise, we risk becoming their next target.

Kellermann noted that cybercrime syndicates have transformed their schemes within the financial sector by stealing confidential market data for digital front-running. These groups have also become increasingly aggressive toward security teams, employing destructive tactics designed to impede their responses. This trend serves as a warning of what may lie ahead.

The report offers valuable insights and specific strategies for countering the rising tide of cybercrime conspiracies and cyber espionage activities.
