Maxthon 6 browser kernel has been updated and it will be tested with Maxthon 6 Beta in the near future.

What is the browser kernel?

The core part of the browser should be the “browser kernel”, also known as the “Rendering Engine”, whose main role is to interpret the page grammar and render the page. Therefore, the “rendering engine” determines how browsers display the content and format information of web pages. Different browser kernels interpret the grammar of web pages differently, resulting in different rendering effects, which causes compatibility problems.

MX6 is Chromium-based browser

In the previous version, Maxthon uses a unique, innovative dual-core design that supports both the Trident and the WebKit rendering engines. In order to adapt the new technology and focus more on the new features and the improvement of user experience, MX6 chose the Chromium open-source kernel as the foundation.

The Chromium engine is one of the most popular kernels in the world, which is developed and updated by Google team. Chromium is an open-source kernel that aims to build a safer, faster, and more stable way for all Internet users to experience the web. Besides Chrome browser, many other browsers are also based on Chromium code, most notably Microsoft Edge and Opera. After the advent of Chromium, it has driven the development of the browser industry.  Some single core and dual core browsers based on Chromium are springing up, such as Sogou, 360, QQ browser, etc., all of which have the same kernel.

MX6 engine updated

Chromium updates frequently and recently it has upgraded to V85.  MX6 has deployed the engine to Chromium85. After this update, there will be significant improvements in the following aspects.

  • Chromium85 will greatly improve the stability and performance ;
  • The Tab Groups feature will be supported to make tab management more efficient ;
  • Use the new Favicon to load animations and support the SVG images as website icons;
  • Introduce global media controls that help you control all of the audio and video sources in your current tabs;
  • The new Web NFC standard will allow websites to interact with NFC tags, adding the design for the Internet of Things;
  • Add AR support;
  • Introduce the new Native File System, enabling developers to build powerful Web Apps;
  • Improve web login security and adjust third-party cookie policy.

Chromium85 is much safer, faster, and more stable. Meanwhile, it also improved the underlying support for the new technology, like the Internet of Things technology, AR technology. MX6 chose Chromium kernel as the foundation, and upgraded the engine to the latest version Chromium85. In the future, Maxthon 6 will follow Chromium updates to provide a better user experience.
