s oFor many, the Assassin’s Creed series serves as an unexpected introduction to the world of parkour. This was certainly the case for many gamers who first learned about the sport through the eyes of virtual assassins leaping across rooftops. However, according to Toby Segar and Benj Cave, two skilled parkour athletes from the UK-based team Storror, this portrayal might be less than accurate.

In a recent episode of the video series “Reality Check,” Toby and Benj were invited to evaluate the depiction of parkour in Assassin’s Creed. Both athletes hold a fondness for the game series, but they didn’t shy away from critiquing its approach to realism. The duo dissected the game’s iconic leaps of faith, revealing surprising insights.

Toby mentioned that jumping into a hay bale from up to eight stories is feasible with flawless technique. Yet, he humorously noted that the grandiose jumps seen in the game would more likely end with “a perfect assassin’s outline in the floor underneath the actual cart.” Their analysis provided a fascinating blend of admiration and scepticism, highlighting the delicate balance between reality and fantasy in gaming.

Toby and Benj had an eye for details that others might easily overlook. They noticed things that wouldn’t have crossed most people’s minds, such as the impressive speed with which Shadows’ Naoe could dash across a tightrope or the skill Mirage’s Basim displayed by executing a one-story drop onto a rope without faltering or tumbling into the streets below.

Interestingly, Toby referred to one particular move as “a hate crime against parkour,” yet it turned out to be one of the most authentic actions they observed. During their viewing of Shadows’ previews, they caught sight of the hefty samurai, Yasuke, hauling himself onto a ledge by swinging his leg upward and leveraging his knee to climb over. This manoeuvre, known as an “alpine knee,” is generally frowned upon in parkour circles due to the knee’s delicate nature and the biomechanics involved. It is strongly advised against putting muchweight on one’s knee in parkour practice.

However, this move perfectly encapsulated Yasuke’s character—a less agile, more brute force tank in Shadows, contrasting sharply with the nimble Naoe. It seemed fitting that Yasuke would be clumsy in parkour, especially when burdened by approximately forty pounds of lamellar armour. Ubisoft’s animators might have deliberately chosen this move to convey that Yasuke likely had a Dexterity score no higher than eight.

In the world of Assassin’s Creed, the most fantastical elements aren’t the feasibility or physics of the manoeuvres themselves. Instead, as Benj keenly observed, it’s the protagonists’ seemingly unbreakable endurance and perfect execution that defy belief. These heroes never falter, even after hours spent leaping across rooftops, and their ability to improvise on the fly starkly contrasts with the meticulous planning required for real parkour.

For those intrigued by such feats, Toby, Benj, and the team at Storror offer a glimpse into this world on Instagram. They’re also developing their own parkour simulation game, aptly named and scheduled for an early access release on Steam by the end of March.
